Welcome from The Commodore of The RBYC

Hello and thank you for taking an interest in our yacht club.

Our overall goal is to provide a cost effective, accessible way for our members to participate in sailing.

The club was originally established almost 20 years ago by a small group of enthusiasts who had just completed their shore-based RYA course and wanted to develop their practical skills further.

Today we are a diverse club with about 100 members across a broad range of adult age groups, well represented by both males and females.  A key focus of the club’s activities continues to be to develop members sailing skills via experience out on the water. Whether you are a complete novice or have some experience, interested in building up to your RYA Yachtmaster or simply want to enjoy sailing in a safe, fun and friendly environment, we are the club for you.

We charter boats at least once a month for a variety of trips. These range from weekends in the Solent, long weekend trips across the channel, trips from other parts of the UK and an annual one week trip within European waters.

Crews are selected for each boat to provide a mix of abilities and hence maximise coaching opportunities. Each boat is skippered by one of the 15 RBYC club skippers. These experienced skippers are at least Yachtmaster Coastal qualified, most are Yachtmaster Offshore and some are RYA Cruising Instructors. All the RBYC club skippers are dedicated to your safety and to improve your sailing.

The boats are typically modern 37ft- 40ft cruisers, and occasionally something a little different including J boat cruising racers, a multi-hull, SB3s and even a Thames Barge.

We are a registered RYA training centre, offering a full range of RYA 1-day shore based and Day Skipper practical courses, many with in-house instructors allowing us to offer the courses at better rates than those commercially available.

Social activities are an integral part of our club. We hold a monthly social meeting often with guest speakers and a popular annual sailing quiz. We have an annual dinner dance with topical awards to celebrate the past year’s events and look forward to the new year’s upcoming events. So, if our club activities and ethos appeal to you then please feel free to contact us via this website.

More information is available in the membership–join section. We look forward to meeting you.
